The story of Miriam
Miriam was the elder sister of Moses and Aaron, playing a crucial role in the survival of her brother and the liberation of Israel. As a young girl, she watched over the basket containing baby Moses as it floated in the Nile. When Pharaoh's daughter discovered the child, Miriam bravely stepped forward to suggest a Hebrew nurse—their own mother. This quick thinking ensured that Moses was raised with an understanding of his heritage while being protected in the palace.
After the Israelites crossed the Red Sea, Miriam was identified as a prophetess and led the women in a celebratory dance and song of victory. Her leadership was significant enough that later biblical writers grouped her with Moses and Aaron as the three leaders sent by God to guide the people out of Egypt. She represented the spiritual and social presence of women in the early community, serving as a primary voice of praise during their desert journey.
However, Miriam also faced moments of conflict, most notably when she and Aaron spoke against Moses regarding his wife and his unique authority. As a result, she was struck with leprosy and excluded from the camp for seven days until Moses interceded for her healing. The people waited for her before moving on, showing her importance to the nation. Miriam died at Kadesh-barnea toward the end of the forty years in the wilderness, shortly before the entry into Canaan.
