The story of Solomon
Solomon, the son of David and Bathsheba, succeeded his father as the third king of Israel. Known for his legendary wisdom, he was granted his request for discernment to lead God's people well. His early reign was marked by peace and prosperity, reaching its height when he fulfilled his father’s dream by building the magnificent Temple in Jerusalem, a house for the name of the Lord.
Despite his early faithfulness, Solomon’s later years were marred by compromise. To secure his political alliances, he married many foreign wives and allowed them to worship their own gods, eventually building shrines for them in Israel. This departure from exclusive devotion to the Lord angered God, and the peace of his kingdom began to unravel, leading to prophecy of the coming division of the tribes.
Solomon is remembered as the primary author of much of Israel’s wisdom literature, including Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon. His story remains a sobering reminder that great wisdom and external success are no substitute for a heart that stays fully loyal to the Lord. His life serves as a grand display of both the possibilities of human achievement and the danger of falling away from faith.
